American Civil War Memorial
In 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed a presidential proclaimation recognizing Waterloo as the birthplace of Memorial Day. The first Memorial Day was May 5 that year. The American Civil War Memorial in Waterloo, New York was dedicated on September 20, 2008. It recognizes the soldiers from the North and the South who fought during the Civil War, and it commemorates the fallen Civil War Soldiers of Waterloo, NY. The Star Stone in the center of the American Civil War Memorial is incised with 620 stars gilt with 22K gold. Each star represents 1000 lives lost.
